Skipping Stones Thanksgiving Sale!

I finally got to meet William and Christine of Skipping Stones Records at this year's New England Popfest, and I can now attest that not only only are they lovely people on the internet, they are also lovely people in real life! So lovely infact that they've just set up a Thanksgiving Sale over at the Skipping Stones website! You can head HERE to get the details. They've got some great records on sale from Celestial, The Charade, Dyrdin, superfallingstars, and others – oh and the Popfest compilation is also part of the sale! I'd highly recommend picking up the Celestial and superfallingstars if you haven't got em already; great records those are. Too bad the new Charade record isn't part of the sale, that would've been pretty convenient :)

So yes, go here for the deals!

Je Suis Animal: "Painted In My Face"

Je Suis Animal are classy.

Let me just say I have done a terrible job of keeping up with Cloudberry as of late. – Odd, too, because ever since reaching 100 3" CDRs their output has slowed dramatically, you know, to that of a normally functioning record label. Every 7" Roque's released so far has been an absolute cracker and the new(ish) Je Suis Animal single is no exception! I've known about it for a little while now, but it wasn't until this morning that I actually gave it a good listen. I have yet to hear the b-side, as I haven't yet ordered the single (I will be doing so tonight!), but the a-side – which is up for download on the Cloudberry site – is fantastic! So fantastic infact, that I think I actually may be more in love with it than even my favorite of tracks from their LP. The song, "Painted In My Face," reminds me a bit of Stereolab! Just listen those hazy, beautiful vocal harmonies and that charging rhythm section – all it needs is some electric organ buzzing along in the mix and it would be... I don't know, it would be really nice. A few more listens and I could definitely see this being one of my favorite singles of the year! Get this record!

Sourpatch

Sourpatch!

I was browsing around on Rose Melberg's MySpace earlier this morning. I like to stop by there from time to time because lots of new bands influenced by Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, The Softies, et al like to comment and leave their praises for Rose. I then go to their pages and then I listen to their songs and then I'm happy. It's a very successful system that I've got going on. Anyway, this morning I came upon a band from San Jose called Sourpatch. Not only have they got a fantastic name, but they've also got a slew of fantastic songs! As I had anticipated before I even clicked their link, they're a little punky, a little poppy, and they sound like the early 90s Northwest. The songs are still a little bit rough, but they're super catchy they've got great melodies, so I'm expecting fantastic things from them in the future! They consist of three girls (Nicole, Christine, Mandi) and one guy (Rich) and they're currently touring the east coast through the end of November. I've got no songs to download, but they've got a demo out and you can listen to most of it over at their MySpace! I'd highly suggest that you do that and then go see them live! Yknow, if you like them, I guess.

Munch!

An Independent Music Video Compilation

While skimming around on Youtube the other day – as I do most every day – I was extremely delighted to find that someone has uploaded the entirety of Munch One and Two!!! Munch was an "Independent Music Video Compilation" released by Season Records in 1994. Then, in 1997, Munch Two was released – this time a co-release between Season and Drive-In Records. The compilations featured videos from a wide array of amazing indiepop bands – The Cat's Miaow, Black Tambourine, Even As We Speak, The Magnetic Fields, Pencil Tin, Rocketship, The Ropers, Po!, The Cannanes, and Allen Clapp, just to name more than a few! Finding original copies of these today i probably harder than finding a needle in a haystack, so it's really awesome indeed that they're all available on Youtube now!

Here's a few of my favorites!
Thanks again to youtube user Everyheaven, whoever you are!!!

Pencil Tin :: Poignant

The Ropers :: Revolver

Boyracer :: Black Fantastic Splitting

You Can't Have It All: A November Mix

Stuff I'm liking a lot at the moment – the moment being November, of course.

November! A time of cold days, sweaters, scarves, really good pine-scented candles, rain, and last, but not least, a very much welcomed break from my typical perpetual business. Though I may not write much about music when I'm busy, that definitely doesn't mean I'm not listening to it, so in the spirit of such logic, I present a new mix! You Can't Have It All collects a little new and a little old – a smattering of my listening habits over the past several weeks. I think it's safe to say that the weather's had a pretty big effect on most of these choices, but – since it seems that everything I do is in some way influenced by the temperature outside my door – no big surprise there. Though I think it's all quite ace, as far as highlights go, I'm still pretty obsessed with the Autocollants track (so much so that the mix is named in it's honor). The horns just couldn't be more perfect and although my voice doesn't quite have the range of a brass instrument, I still find myself humming the melody everytime. The songs from Gaze and Mazzy Star could make you cry and if anything you're like me, you'll be in awe of Alison's Halo. All in all, I'd consider it a fantastic use of 45 minutes of your day or night.

Indiepopedia!!

Since Wikipedia tends to deem the depths indiepop not important enough to exist, it's a good thing we've recently taken up our own land! Enter Indiepopedia! Though still in it's early stages, it's on it's way to becoming an incredible and everlasting resource to the International Pop Underground! But! It won't go anywhere without your help – it is a wiki, and that means that YOU need to help build it! So, PLEASE head over and check it out, and PLEASE feel inclined to add and edit anything that you think should be there!!! Everyone's counting on everyone, so let's make this a great thing!

Also, please feel free to join in the discussion over at Anorak! :)

New Hari and Aino: "A Considerate Kind of Home"

Following the release of their debut LP this past Summer, Hari and Aino, are soon to deliver their second release for Cloudberry Records – and this time it's on vinyl! The single, with fantastic cover artwork from Amy Ruppel, features "A Considerate Kind of Home" b/w "Maple". "A Considerate Kind of Home" is up for free download right now over at Cloudberry HQ, and I can't stop listening to it! It's nothing too new, per se, but then – when you're Hari and Aino and you make indiepop this sweet – why change? The song's got a fun, dance-y bassline along with the usual suspects: jangly guitar, infectious melodies, and Andrea's swoonsome vocal delivery.

7" out soon on Cloudberry Records!

Fireflies "Cherry Blossom Girl" 7"

The first single from new London/Belfast label Papillons Noirs is from the number one coziest band in all of Chicago – Fireflies. The a-side is a cover of Air's "Cherry Blossom Girl", which I think – as I've mentioned sometime before – far surpasses the original. Not only is it an absolutely gorgeous rendition, but like all of Fireflies' recordings – it's warmer than a blanket and a bowl of soup on the very coldest days of autumn and winter. Plus, I like how intimate Fireflies always feel, like he's whispering the song into your ear, like your the only who will ever hear it. Anyway, it's fantastic to see that I can now have it on lovely, warm 7" vinyl! I'd suggest throwing a little dust on it for that extra special crackle! Or maybe not.
