Vote For The Royal Court Of Twee!
Vote For The Royal Court of Twee!
NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.
By fairly popular demand, here it is, the first step to deciding the by-no-means-official-but-fun-anyway Royal Court of Twee: The Nominations! Okay, so I thought about it a little bit and here's what I decided will happen. First, there will be The Nominations (this post), where in the comments, you will nominate a total of FIVE bands. These will obviously be your top five favorites and you can nominate any band you wish. I will let this go for probably a week, as to let enough nominations come in. Please tell lots of people to come and nominate and vote because a vote with no voters in no fun!
Next, I will tally up the nominations and will choose what will hopefully be something between 20 and 30 of the most highly nominated bands and those will be the bands you will ultimately voting from. The post following this post will be the VOTING post and I will let you know then how many bands you will be allowed to vote for at that time. Okay so, go make your nominations! Think your choices through and tell everyone you can to come and nominate/vote! Yay!
Umm, for reference, I think Nitsuh Abebe's "Twee As Fuck" article published by Pitchfork in 2005 is probably the best, most comprehensive piece ever written on the subject of twee.
*EDIT* Due to arguments in the comments concerning the legitimacy of the word "twee," I thought I'd mention this out here: I chose "twee" for the title because it sounded fitting. Feel free, however, to chose any jangle pop/indiepop/shambling bands of your liking, if that's what you would rather call them. Stumble It!
183 Comments:
1. pants yell
2. the math and physics club
3. tiger trap
4. the field mice
5. the boy least likely to
In no particular order, and just from the top of my head:
1. Boy Least Likely To
2. I'm From Barcelona
3. Los Campesinos!
4. The Grates
6. Mates of State
1. Pants Yell!
2. Boy Least Likely To
3. Arrah and the Ferns
4. The Blow
5. Andy's Airport of Love
I nominate Andy as the Duke of Twee because he kinda looks like a duke! I nominate Herbie as the Wizard of Twee because I think he'd look good with a pointy hat and a big white beard! I nominate Pants Yell as the Prince of Twee because they're not quite mature enough to be the King yet! I nominate Tullycraft as the Jester of Twee because they make me laugh and dance and sing! I nominate you, Matt of Annapolis as the guy that has the scroll and goes HERE YE! HERE YE! because I just really want to hear you say those words!

1. heavenly
2. the field mice
3. talulah gosh
4. beat happening
5. tiger trap
1. Beat Happening started putting out music in 1983. They are arguably the most influential and important twee band of all time. They did it before anyone and made it ok to be twee.
2. Sarah Records might be the world's most famous twee label and Heavenly (along with the Field Mice) were their flagship band. They created the sound that most people associate with twee. Mathew Fletcher, the band's drummer and Amelia's brother, committed suicide prior to the band's final record being released. To my knowledge, he may be the only twee casualty.
3. If Tullycraft had only released the two anthems "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend Is Too Stupid To know About" and "Twee" - they would still deserve to be on this list, but they have put out countless great singles and excellent albums. It seems like they have been around forever and yet they continue to stay fresh and keep twee alive.
4. The legacy The Field Mice managed to leave in their short three year career is nothing short of amazing. Over the years, since the band broke-up they've received significant critical praise and has given twee some much overdue credit.
5. Even though Tiger Trap only released one album and one EP the footprint they left was huge. Tiger Trap exemplified the new generation of twee in the early '90s. Rose Melbelg went on to be a major player in the indie music scene playing such bands as The Softies, Gaze, and Go Sailor.

1. beat happening
2. rocketship
3. andy's airport of love
4. pants yell!
5. the softies
wow jack. that was a nice summary, especially for those not familar with the bands. well done.
i guess also, if you want to leave any blurbs with your nominations, i may include them int he voting post for each band that is ultimately in the final choosing.
Pants Yell! in the Royal Court of Twee? Let's be serious! They wouldn't even be invited to a party at the Castle! In two years I guarantee none of us will remember that band. Let's nominate bands that have actually had some sort of influence on Twee. Come on people! Pants Yell! don't belong anywhere near a list with bands like:
Talulah Gosh
The Pastels
The Softies
Tullycraft
Beat Happening
wow I just feel like so liberated and free
i'm gonna have to agree with dustin. dont get me wrong, i love pants yell!, but the fact is they're still a very young band and have had little influence on the twee.
same goes for the boy least likely to, as well, i think.
but let's try to keep commentary and arguments out of this one. when the results are announced we can tear each other apart like wild animals.
Top Five Twee Bands & Songs:
Heavenly "c is the heavenly option"
The Field Mice "emma's house"
The Pooh Sticks "on tape"
Beat Happening "indian summer"
Tullycraft "fuck me i'm twee"
1. belle and sebastian
2. the arctic monkeys
3. bright eyes
4. the strokes
5. the postal service
oooh good call with the wedding present
your obsession with twee is so adorable!

five WORST nominations so far:
1. The Strokes
2. The Arctic Monkeys
3. Pants Yell!
4. Bright Eyes
5. Postal Service
yeaaaaah. i'm assumign that was probably a joke though. i'm not going to count it.
well, no, i am counting pants yell! since so many people nominated them. we need more people to nominate though so so the real royalty ends up at the top!
Belle & Sebastian
Beulah
Fugu
the Essex Green
Spearmint
The 'top of the list' nominations for the Royal Court Of Twee are Heavenly, Beat Happening, Tullycraft and Tiger Trap. That has to be obvious to anyone who's been even partially awake for the past fifteen years.... but aren't we forgetting about The Lucksmiths?!
Can I cast a vote against Pants Yell? I agree with Dustin, they don't belong anywhere near a list like this. To include them would be insulting to the deserving bands and just make all of us look stupid.
1. desaperacidos
2. the decemberists
3. minus the bear
4. jenny lewis
5. the clientele
The Essex Green, Minus the Bear, and Jenny Lewis are certainly not twee, and actually not very good. Why are you people plaguing us with these awful nominations? Is it that you don't know your history? Do you need Matt to explain to you what twee is? What would inspire you to nominate Beulah to the Royal Court of Twee? Are you simply ignorant?
lindsey, i think if we can get enough people here nominating and voting for the deserving bands, it will probably overthrow the py! votes anyway
i posted a link on tracker.twee.se
if you know of anywhere else we could tell people to come vote, please let them know!
i posted a link to the twee as fuck article, and anyone that' sbeen reading this blog lately should have a decent understanding of what were looking for. i'm not what else i could do.
Can I nominate the early Soup Dragons? Their 1st album was very twee, before they recorded that dumb Rolling Stones cover.
you can nominate whoever you wish
not sure exactly what's legal and what's not, but here's my input!
1. small factory
2. black tambourine
3. mccarthy
4. beat happening
5. rocketship
Thanks Lindsey! How could we have forgotten about The Lucksmiths?
1. The Lucksmiths
2. The Softies
3. Talulah Gosh
4. The Field Fice
5. Tullycraft
good nominations!
hopefully more people will nominate the lucksmiths
I took the liberty of deciphering "twee" as "pop music" when I made my list as I don't really listen to man "twee" bands.
1) Beat Happeneing
2) Rocketship
3) Television Personalities
4) Jonathan Richman
5) N.W.A
also please stop putting andy's airport of love down :(
no offense andy, but i don't think there's any real danger of andy's airport of love making it onto a list with so many well established bands.
man some people have some shitty nominations.
the field mice
tullycraft
go sailor
heavenly
beat happening
Can I cast a vote against Pants Yell! too? Lindsey is right. This list would look dumb with them on it.
jewlie! hey! good picks!
just cast your own votes and they'll surpass pants yell! i'm sure, just keep people coming!

THE LUCKSMITHS
#1. lucksmiths
i mean, you couldve just picked 4 more.
It's hard for me to get behind Rocketship because they only released that one good album back in 1996, and have since followed it up with some truly terrible music. Are they allowed to rest on their laurels for that long?
i guess we'll find out! they seem to be getting a pretty decent amount of nominations. the public will speak!
1. Field Mice
2. Pastels
3. Heavenly
4. Pooh Sticks
5. Lucksmiths
Beat Happening gave twee attitude
Tullycraft gave twee a theme song and a sense of humor
Heavenly gave twee idols
The Softies gave twee the perfect voice in Rose Melberg
Cub re-packaged twee and called it cuddle-core

5. Belle and Sebastian (even if they don't consider themselves twee, I do)
I think it might take Tullycraft to explain to me who some of these bands are. They seem to be pretty familiar with the whole history of twee. I'm going to stick with nominating bands I actually own cds by.
1. Math and Physics Club
2. Tullycraft
3. The Softies
4. All Girl Summer Fun Band
5. The Lucksmiths
Teenage Fanclub, a twee band or a power pop band?
I'd have to say power-pop band
1. Tullycraft
2. Math and Physics Club
3. Beat Happening
4. Pants Yell! (sorry guyz)
5. so many I want to put but I don't think im good enough at the deciding what is twee game even with that article
I'm with Kevin, Mickey and Charlie! Gimme some Sarah Records!
1. Blueboy
2. Secret Shine
3. 14 Iced Bears
4. Heavenly
5. Aberdeen
ok two things:
1. i think the "people" posting pants yell is actually the same person re-posting different lists...come on, look at the lists, it's so obvious.
2.ummm seriously, postal service? wtf????
I think you might be right! Could it actually be the band voting for themselves?
I'll bet it is the band voting for themselves. How lame is that?
As Dustin wrote in an earlier post: "In two years I guarantee none of us will remember that band" - it's so true!
Oh! I also want to list my TOP 5 TWEE SONGS
Beat Happening - Bewitched
The Pastels - Crawl Babies
Tullycraft - Pop Songs Your Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About
Honeybunch - Hey Blue Sky
Tiger Trap - Words And Smiles
I'll always remember you Pants Yell! :'(

Boycrazy are pretty good. I'm not sure they're "Royal Court of Twee" good, but still worth checking out. My top five:
1. The Field Mice

3. The Pastels
4. The Shop Assistants
5. Blueboy
1. 14 iced bears
2. pants yell
3. call and response
4. beat happening
5. button happy
I don't think Griffing got the memo. A Pants Yell! vote is a wasted vote. And honestly dude... are you serious about Call And Response and Button Happy? What impact have either of those bands had on twee?
I guess it needs to be stated again. Pants Yell! are a completely irrelevant band!!! They will have no place in indie pop history! Their name needs not be mentioned here.

i'm seriously gonna be tallying for the rest of my life now.
Please Please Please tell me that Paul McCartney will be Godfather of Twee. He is the original Twee Artist. Come on, Mother Nature's Son? It's fucking twee. He might not be indie, but he's always twee.

1. The Field Mice
2. Blueboy
3. They Go Boom
4. Brighter
5. St. Chistopher
i think thats the only st. christopher nomination so far! cmon people!
Umm... the first Blueboy single was released in 1991. Sorry.
Matt,
Mickey voted for St. Chistopher yesterday. Are you counting these votes properly?
I would LOVE to see St. Chistopher and the old Sarah Records guard represented on the Twee ballot! Here's another vote for them.
1. St. Chistopher
2. Aberdeen
3. Secret Shine
4. Blueboy
5. Another Sunny Day
i really don't think it's necessary to bash pants yell any further! one person pointed out they don't belong on the lists, but why does everyone feel the need to say they suck every post. i mean honestly. we know you are all cool enough to acknowledge pants yell's insignificance in "twee history." give it up.
Wasn't it determined that Pants Yell! was nominating themselves to be in the Royal Court of Twee? They obviously must think they're some important band or deserve some sort of recognition for something? For what I'm not exactly sure? Their impact on indiepop has been exactly 0%. They're a completely forgettable band.
Whether they were front-loading some support for themselves or not is a question I leave to the experts. It was rather suspicious though that the first, like, six posters had them as #1. Don't get me wrong, I think they're pretty good...but greatest twee band ever...eh, pull the other one.

5 Best Twee Bands Ever!
1. Another Sunny Day
2. Brighter

5. Blueboy
yeah, guys, please stop getting all over pants yell!
i can guarantee you they are not voting for themselves. they obviously just have a good amount of fans that read this blog, which may not be wholey familiar with early tweepop enough to vote in the way most of the rest of you are voting. the important bands will still end up on top, you have nothing worry about, i mean, look at the nominations... okay.

hmm, limiting it to five is tough! i'm going for
- the wedding present
- the bats
- beat happening
- the bartlebees
- talulah gosh, heavenly, pooh sticks and anything else amelia fletcher (my queen of twee!)
i think that's cheating. oops.
amy
Wow! Northern Picture Library! I had forgotten about them. I would love to see them on the ballot!
So Matt, after you narrow the list down to 20 or 30 bands for the ballot, how many will bands will ultimately make it to the 'Royal Court Of Twee?'
here is my list:
1. honeybunch
2. courtney love (the band)
3. northern picture library
4. veronica lake
5. the sugargliders
after i whittle it down to a 20 band ballot. then, you will make your final votes. choosing 3 from the list and voting for them. these are just the ballot nominations.
Will the final list be the Top Ten Bands of Twee?
We only get to vote for 3? NO!!! It was hard enough to narrow it down to just 5. Matt, I think we should be able to vote for 5 again and the 10 bands with the most votes are officially "The Royal Court Of Twee" - I don't mean to be stepping on your toes... sorry.
It is going to be next to impossible to vote for just three
1. TREMBLING BLUE STARS
2.CATS'S MIAOW
3.BRITTLE STARS
4.CONSULTANTS
5. ...and just about every band on SHELFLIFE,SIESTA,ELEFANT,MATINEE.
haha OKAY, i can see a wave of protest coming. we'll vote for FIVE! :D
Matt,
Twee is far too varied. The Field Mice, Beat Happening, The Wake, Tullycraft, Heavenly, The Softies, 14 Iced Bears, and The Sea Urchins are make different kinds of music that all falls under the Twee umbrella. You can't narrow Twee down to just 3 or 5 bands... I think 10 bands should make up the Royal Court. That might represent a better cross-section.
yeah, the final "royal court" will be ten bands. but for the final voting you will be choosing FIVE bands to vote for. these are just the nominations right now for what the final voting ballot will be.
even though I really love the pants yell 7" and some of the tracks on the album are ace... but hey, they're not among the 5 top bands. but hey, who am I to judge?!?!?! and who are you to judge. snobs=) for myself, I have a hard time choosing anything! but here are bands that I have held higher than high (in no particular order):
1) Cats miaow, the
2) Smiths, the
3) Sundays, the
4) and the 4th and 5th spot go out to all the records occupying my space here... though per definition a lot of them, as for my nominees here and the others nominees, wouldn't really count as "twee".
so with that said, why not rename it since some of the bands that get most votes won't be twee. why not "the royal court of pop" (or indie...)?
oh, now I remembered a fatal mistake!!! (this is what happens when I have to choose hehe...)
I nominate:
They Go Boom!!
In no real order...
1. Heavenly
2. Tiger Trap
3. The Softies
4. The Lucksmiths
5. Camera Obscura
1. Secret Shine
2. Brighter
3. Tiger Trap
4. The Wake
5. Tullycraft
1. Beat Happening
2. Talulah Gosh
3. The Pastels
4. The Television Personalities
5. Dolly Mixture
i'd like to call my list 'forgotten favorites'
1. aberdeen
2. blueboy
3. another sunny day
4. the wake
5. the sea urchins
What on earth is twee about the Bats or the Wedding Present - am I being dozey? I'm 38 and my teenage years were spent listening to bands like this. I can't stand to here my favourite bands being denegrated like this. Dave Gedge'd be chocking on his pint!Twee! I preferred 'cutie' or 'shambling'. By the way the Soup Dragons first album sounds like the bloody Sonics compared to Heavenly. God it's all so middle-class! And Felt aren't twee either. They're a POP group. So says Lawrence!Dictionary definitions of music. I don't know. How can you all be so bloody subjective! Etc Pip
Excuse typo's - I haven't slept for two days...pip

pip,
i don't know if you able to notice, but this is all in FUN. no where did i say this was the end all objective, best twee bands ever. twee means something slightly different to anyone who knows about it. if someone wants to look at felt as twee, then so be it. this list is going to 100% completely subjective and that's, i think, why it's gonna be interesting.
They Go Boom MUST be on the ballot!!!!

Hey! To be quite honest, the music my band Pants Yell! has recorded is better than at least 95% of the bands you twee losers have nominated for this dumb list.
1) Blueboy
2) Another Sunny Day
3) The Pastels
4) St. Christopher
5) THEY GO BOOM.... yeah!!!!
I agree the 'twee' tag is misleading. Most of the bands listed aren't 'twee' (thank god)...
Whenever I hear twee I just substitute 'jangly pop' and then my cognitive dissonance melts away.
Andrew, I'm not sure I agree with you... but good luck with your band!
1. Beat Happening
2. 14 Iced Bears
3. The Field Mice
4. Cub
5. The Sugargliders
well, the royal court of jangle pop, or pop, or indiepop just doesnt sound as fun as twee. some people ate the word, i have no problems with it.
i love all the sarah records representation! this is such a great idea!!!! i consider all of these bands to be twee.

Followed by Beat Happening, Talulah Gosh, TVP, Field Mice, and follow them up with a bunch of other great bands...

To be quite honest, I've never been able to determine what the hell twee is, and what indie is, and all that rubish. So, I just went with what I liked, I figure that works best.
