The Pipettes: "A Winter's Sky"

I've been sitting on this song for quite a while and I can sit upon it no more. The debut full length We Are The Pipettes from The Pipettes is already one of the very best records I've heard so far this year, but I left it off of my Top 10 list because I didn't want to include anything on it that wasn't already released. Aside from maybe "Pull Shapes" this is definitely my favorite track from an album that manages to not have one weak track. I just don't understand how anyone could not love this band, everything about them is so amazingly infectious, including this song:

[MP3]: The Pipettes :: A Winter's Sky
For those of you that have only heard the singles, this song may come off as a bit out of place at first because as songs like "Pull Shapes" and "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me" are the epitome of a dance party, this one is more suited for the night ending slow dance. The organ is also a nice surprise and the poppy drum rolls lying under the chorus manage to get stuck on you more and more after every listen. My favorite part of this song, and the reason I think it's such a successful song, is the feeling of buildup in the chorus. It feels like the line "Underneath a winter's sky" gains strength with each syllable and it makes me melt everytime.

We Are The Pipettes will be released on July 17th
The "Pull Shapes" single will be released on July 3rd

100% crap. Sounds like a soundtrack to a horrible teen flick starring Ashlee Simpson or something. Really awful music. But for those without the balls to dig deep into music, and can sustain themselves at the shallow end of the pool - knock yourself out. And yes - I have heard the album, given it a fair chance. Gave it away to my niece, who returned it to me with the same reaction - CRAP.

music doesnt have to be deep and thoughtful to be enjoyable. the pipettes are just a really fun band, and i really enjoy their music.

well thats true, a band like the new pornographers is miles ahead of a band like the pipettes, but theyre also doing different things and with different aims. and rightfully so, a band like the pipettes also would deserve as much credit or respect as a band like the new pronographers, but in saying that, i also feel like the songs the pipettes, however ironic and upfront they may be, are still capable of being listened to and enjoyed. i can agree with what you're saying, but it doesn't mean i have to dislike the music.

"and rightfully so, a band like the pipettes also would deserve as much credit or respect as a band like the new pronographers"

where it says would in that sentence, it should say "wouldn't"

oopsie.

Well I *have* seen the Pipettes live, and they're awesome, infectiously enthusiastic and not at all fake. There's a believable simplicity to a song like 'Judy'.

I always find it odd that the Pipettes are guaranteed to cause an argument on most music boards, most of whom would love it if they were Swedish or a Universal Recordings act not primarily aimed at them. You might be able to justify it if they were a massive chart act, but they aren't - the NME aren't interested, daytime BBC Radio 1 doesn't play them, the pop media don't, MTV don't, their one top 40 single pretty much came without hype of any type but was aided by their cult following from playing live. Much as I love them, I do sometimes feel that they've made this rod for their own back, almost a contrivance of a contrivance in how they've chosen to present themselves when actually it's more a seven piece unit than three dancing girls and some blokes at the back. Clearly there's some amount of intelligence and thought put into it from all sides, but when it's a band from the indie sector going pop a lot aren't going to get past that.

Gwenno's solo stuff is great, but nobody on the blogs seems to have picked up on Rose's guest vocal for a band called the Young Playthings - second track on http://www.myspace.com/youngplaythings

To everyone bashing the pipettes music about not being deep - shut up. It's music not math, a riff is a riff - listen with your god damn ears, and don't pick it apart because then there's no joy in it all.
