A monthly mix: June 2011!

Hi! Things are back in order and on time this month. Hopefully I will not be missing another whole month anytime soon! This month's mix is a 100% SUNNY SUMMER FUZZY JANGLE FEEDBACK FEST split almost 50/50 between old Summery favorites and brand new, soon-to-be Summer mix staples. The mix ends just as excitingly as it opens and it doesn't slow down much from point A to point B. Make sure you've got plenty of room to move around because this mix definitely requires some light dancing at the very least. LISTEN TO THESE JAMZ!

June

Chapel Hill's June

Though it wasn't all that long ago, I've already forgotten where I heard of June in the first place, but I'm so glad glad I took the chance and downloaded their singles. I'm typically sold on "90s Chapel Hill" anyway, but reviews and descriptions only made them sound even sweeter. June don't sound all that sweet, though. Amongst the woven guitar lines and bursts of fuzz and distortion, Kat Cook's vocal harmonies still manage to steal the show in most of June's recordings. Way up front and mostly bereft of reverb or any other kind of effects, her voice ends up playing a very powerful role and the lines stick to you like glue almost immediately. They released three singles—one of which produced by Mr. Mitch Easter—and one one album in 1996 before breaking up nearly a month after. I've still yet to hear the full-length, but the three singles have been hogging most of my ear-time lately. Listen to "Stripteaser", the A-side from their second single in 1993 of the same name.

Summer!

The June mix is here! I feel quite bad for completely missing May, but I was a bit too distracted with at least a million things that it just never really came together. I've got a lot more free time right now though, so for the time being, you might see a little more action going on here than usual!

The cover art for this month's mix might be one of my favorites and it also happens to be relevant to my recent interest in Paris. "Paris" by Northern Picture Library is also the closing track on the mix — are you starting to notice the connections?? The song choices are all over the place, but it all works out, I promise. I bet The Beach Boys never thought they would be sharing a tracklist with the rest of these bands! A monthly mix: June!

Guess the movie!

It's that time again! This marks the very first two mix streak of consecutive monthly mixes – as you may know, I tend to forget to keep these kinds of 'regular' things going! About the mix though, it's a very good one! Featuring a smattering of mostly U.S. indiepop mostly from the 90s mostly with leanings towards quick, noisy, fuzzy, hook-laden pop songs. In short, the perfect thing for these hot summer days. Personal highlights include Poastal's "The Absolute Magnitude...", with it's speedy and totally unrelenting bassline; Fuzzy's "Flashlight", which I only just heard very recently, but have quickly fallen in love with it – look at her voice go!; and Red Dye No. 5's "Hope", a song I'd been meaning to track down for a long time, from a compilation (Pure Spun Sugar) which I'd also been trying to locate for quite some time! I have it now and I couldn't be happier. I hope you love the mix! Let me know what you think of it!
