Elm City Popfest!

The news of no New England Popfest this year was a bit sad to hear when it was announced back in the beginning of September, but just a few weeks later, the announcement of the very first Elm City Popfest was like a shining beacon of hope! A beautiful, Sunny Day In Glasgow-headlined, beacon of hope! Elm City Popfest will take place this year on November 14th in New Haven, Connetticut – Tweefort HQ, as some may know. The popfest is being put on as a collaboration between both Tweefort and CT Indie and will be a sort of mini-popfest of sorts. Music will start around 3pm in the afternoon on Saturday and will probably wind down sometime around 11pm. The day's full schedule looks like this:

3:00 PM - FayRey (New Haven/New York)
3:45 PM - One Happy Island (Boston)
4:30 PM - The Sugarplums (Baltimore) *
5:15 PM - The Cavemen Go (New Haven/Boston)
6:00 PM - The Metric Mile (New York)

7:00 PM - Intermission

8:00 PM - ArtSpace Underground @ Elm City PopFest begins with DJ and performance art

9:00 PM - The Tyler Trudeau Attempt (New Haven)
10:00 PM - A Sunny Day In Glasgow (Philadelphia)

* The Sugarplums were set to play the popfest, but unfortunately, due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts and bad tires, we had to cancel.

A full day ticket for the Popfest is only $8 (!) and all proceeds will go to benefit Artspace New Haven, which has undergone more than $90,000 in budget cuts this year. Artspace is an artist and volunteer run contemporary arts non-profit whose mission is to catalyze artistic efforts, to connect artists, audiences, and resources.

NYC Popfest Update!

Hey guys, a bit of a Popfest update here. Finishing School, which is the wonderful solo project of Sasha bell from The Essex Green and Ladybug Transistor, has been added to the last show of the Popfest. The fine Popfest folks tried their best to get The Essex Green, but since Chris wasn't able to make it, Finishing School stepped up. Jeff and Julia may also be joining Sasha on stage anyway, so it should still be pretty great. They'll be playing alongside Allen Clapp and my darling Lil' Hospital on the last day of the Popfest, Monday May 28th, for the Memorial Day BBQ Day Show! Don't miss it!

Road to the 2007 NYC Popfest: The Baskervilles

New York's Baskervilles!

Incase you haven't been paying close attention, I am STILL on the Bs in the alphabetical Popfest extravaganza. I last covered The Ballet, and if I'm doing this right we should be moving right on ahead to New York's very own, The Baskervilles. Like The Ballet, I hardly know a thing about The Baskervilles. Their MySpace lists influences from the Television Personalities to Dolly Mixture to Johnathan Richman, so at least you can be sure they're working off a pretty solid foundation. Mostly I just hear a pretty strong TVPs sound to the songs that I've listened to so far, which is miles away from a complaint, infact I'm pleased as punch to have finally heard these guys. OMG RUN-ON SENTENCE LOCK ME UP/.

They're currently doing this thing called the Twilight 14 where they are releasing a free MP3 (all produced by Mitch Easter) on their website with virtual sleeves designed by a different contemporary artist each month, and well, it's a pretty awesome idea. Download April's single and don't forget they'll be playing the Popfest May 25th at The Delancey with Mitch Easter, The Secret History, and The Smittens!

Road to the 2007 NYC Popfest: The Ballet

The Ballet from New York

Until looking over the lineups for the Popfest this year I'd never heard of The Ballet. However, what I now know is that a.) they're from New York and b.) they're pretty good. They make pretty catchy drum-machine led indiepop in the vein of something like The Magnetic Fields or The Mathletes, with handclaps, electronic bleeps, and other fun stuff. The Ballet will be playing the 8PM show on May 26th with Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Harvey Williams, The Ballet, and more!

Road to the 2007 NYC Popfest: Ballboy

Ballboy

Ballboy are three guys and one gal from Edinburgh, Scotland and they play songs that are pop songs. The band's mostly mopey jangle brings to mind names like Belle and Sebastian, and at times, The Go-Betweens. They signed to SL records back in 1999 and ended up releasing three great EPs. Three years later they released Club Anthems 2001, a compilation gathering up their first three EPs. If you liek what you hear below and are looking for a good place to start, I would definitely recommend picking up Club Anthems 2001. Ballboy will be playing the 8PM show on May 26th with Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, Harvey Williams, The Besties, and more!

Road to the 2007 NYC Popfest: Allen Clapp and His Orchestra

Allen Clapp and a cropped out cat.

Allen Clapp is a one man pop song machine. He released a number of singles in the early '90s as Allen Clapp and one fantastic full-length record, finally employing "His Orchestra." The album, One Hundred Percent Chance Of Rain, was released on the Bus Stop Label in 1993 and features some Allen's best work ever, and my favorite song, "Something Strange Happens." Allen Clapp and His Orchestra will be playing the Memorial Day BBQ and show on the last day of the Popfest, May 28th.

We Like Our Bitches Crazy is your guide to every band playing the 2007 NYC Popfest, in alphabetical order, OBVIOUSLY.

As the caption above says, We Like Our Bitches Crazy will hopefully be your all-encompassing guide to just about every act set to play the 2007 NYC Popfest. The road will be rough, and I may not get to every band, but I will try, I WILL TRY.

First out of the alphabet door are (how appropriate) NYC's own Affair d'Coeur. They play noisy as hell pop songs with lots of feedback that sound kinda like the jangle of The Flatmates meets the blatant noise of early Jesus and Mary Chain. They'll be playing the Popfest alongside The Smittens and The Secret History, among others, on May 28th at The Delancey. Listen to some songs:

NYC POPFEST 2007!

The spring festival to end all spring/summer festivals!

OKAY, so basically, the 2007 NYC Popfest is going to be amazing. The shows and events will be taking place between May 24th and May 28th, ending with a super-awesome Memorial Day BBQ and show on the 28th! Shows will be taking place throughout the week at Europa, The Delancey, Astroland, The Knitting Factory, Luna Lounge, and Union Pool.
